Hatton and Little Heath Special Schools Strike Action
178 teachers and support staff at two special schools in Redbridge have served notice for 4 days of strike action commencing June 4th, following a 98% Yes vote for action.
Hatton Primary and Little Heath secondary are the main provision for pupils with severe learning difficulties in Redbridge, specialising in support for severe autism. The strike is over concerns about the health and safety of their staff and students.
Over the past decade student numbers at the schools have grown rapidly while funding to expand provision has failed to keep pace. This is largely the responsibility of central Government, who have reduced funding for buildings while carrying out a policy increasing special school pupil numbers. However, NEU members also believe that the existing plans for expansion using what Redbridge Council has been given could be improved significantly with the resources available.
NEU members at both schools are striking to ensure the expansion plans for SEND students allows full access to the curriculum in spaces that are safe and adequate. NEU members are calling on Redbridge Local Authority to address members’ concerns without the need for further strikes.
